Myth, landmark, facts. Berlin, April 2024
°
I’m standing in Berlin on Pariser Platz in front of the Brandenburg Gate, surrounded by many tourists and looking out over the colorful crowd.
°
On the right of the picture there is a name that is a myth.
A multitude of stories and legends, exciting, true, invented or just a little more embellished to captivate you a little more, hide the fact that today’s building is not a reconstruction, but a historicizing redesign acts.
Built after the fall of the Berlin Wall. – The myth enchants, the facts captivate.
°
In the middle there are street lamps, which also remind us of times long past. – Also these replicas of the two-flame Schupmann candlesticks. With these richly decorated arc lamp candelabra he won a competition to design street lamps for the Unter den Linden boulevard in 1887.
°
On the left we see the Berlin television tower. At 368 m, it is still the tallest structure in Germany and – it seems to me – omnipresent in Berlin.
Built from 1965 to 1969 by Deutsche Post in the former eastern part of the city.
°
Destruction, reconstruction or complete redesign are omnipresent for me when I walk through this part of Berlin.
That’s why my thoughts always go from the present back to the past and also to the future of this city and its architecture.
