Christ as ruler of the world

Christ as ruler of the world

The apse of San Vitale shows Christ sitting on a globe. He is flanked by two angels.

On the left we see Saint Vitalis, who is presented with the martyr’s crown by Christ. On the right (without the halo) Saint Ecclesius – Bishop of Ravenna and founder of San Vitale – depicted with the church model of San Vitale.

°The beardless Christ is depicted as a youthful hero according to ancient models.

A blooming landscape spreads out beneath the figures, above which we see stripes of blue and red and white clouds, as they announce the arrival of Christ as judge in the apocalypse.
